What ClearVoting stores, where, who holds it and for how long. This page describes what the site's code does today.
The notify form
When you ask to be emailed when your state is added, we store your email, your state and the time, in a private Google Sheet. If the spreadsheet is unavailable, a sign-up may be written to a temporary file on our server, which is deleted when the server restarts.
The feedback form
When you send feedback, we store your message, the address of the page you were on (which may include a ZIP you typed), the page type, the id and name of the member, bill or state on that page, and the time, in the same Google account. If the spreadsheet is unavailable, feedback may be written to a temporary file on our server, which is deleted when the server restarts.
Deleting your email
To have your email deleted, send a request through the feedback form with the address to remove. Requests land in the feedback sheet and are handled by hand.
What stays in your browser
We remember where you live, never how you look. Your state and district stay in your browser (cv-home) until you press Forget. Whether you revealed party labels is kept only for this browsing session in this tab. Showing them asks our server for the party field, so that request appears in our hosts' request logs like any page address.
Logs
The ZIP you type becomes part of the page address, so it appears in our hosts' request logs along with your IP address. We use those logs only for counts of page paths. Render keeps request logs for a limited period set by its plan; we keep no copy.
Who handles data for us
- Google (Sheets): holds the notify and feedback sheets.
- Render (hosting): runs the server and keeps its request logs.
- Cloudflare (network): carries every request to our server.
Requests to other sites
This site makes no third-party requests except member photos from congress.gov, which receives only our site's address as the referrer.
