Why We Built This
We built ClearVoting because we couldn't find a simple way to see how our representatives actually vote. Congressional voting records are public, but they're buried in government websites, written in legal language, and hard to make sense of.
We believe democracy works better when everyone can understand what's happening in Congress — not just lawyers and policy experts. So we built a tool that takes real voting data and presents it in plain language, without jargon, without spin, and without telling you what to think.
About This Project
ClearVoting is an independent, non-partisan volunteer project. It is not funded by or affiliated with any campaign, party, or advocacy group. If you spot an error or have a question, use the feedback button on any page — a person reads every message.
Data updates weekly through an automated sync from Congress.gov and Senate.gov, and the footer of every page shows when the last update ran.
Today we cover the US Congress for members from California, Florida, New York, and Texas, including House and Senate roll-call votes from the 117th through 119th Congresses. Campaign finance figures come from the FEC's 2024 election cycle. More states are coming.
What We Do Differently
- Plain language — Bill summaries written so anyone can understand them, not just policy experts
- No party bias — Party affiliations are hidden by default so you can evaluate representatives on their votes, not their label
- Just the facts — We show voting records and let you form your own opinion. No editorials, no ratings, no spin.
- Real data — Everything comes directly from Congress.gov and Senate.gov official records
How We Stay Unbiased
- Official data only — Every vote, bill, and action comes directly from government sources. We never editorialize or add our own interpretation.
- AI with guardrails — Our plain-language summaries follow 12 strict rules for neutrality: no loaded language, no editorial framing, no implicit judgment. Each summary presents what a bill does, not whether it's good or bad.
- Party labels hidden — By default, you see representatives and their votes without party labels. This lets you evaluate their record on its merits before knowing their affiliation.
- Both sides presented — When we show what people are saying about a bill, we always present both supporters and critics side by side.
Our Data Sources
ClearVoting pulls all data directly from official government sources. We don't use intermediaries, aggregators, or third-party databases.
What We Don't Do
- We don't score or rank representatives
- We don't endorse candidates or parties
- We don't add editorial opinions to any page
- We don't sell data or target you with ads
- We don't tell you how to vote — we show you how they voted
