Stop members of Congress and their families from buying stocks while in office
- Members of Congress cannot buy individual stocks or similar investments while serving in office.
- Before selling a stock, a member must post public notice 7 to 14 days ahead, listing the planned date, what is sold, and how many shares.
- That notice goes online through House or Senate staff and must be pulled back if the member decides not to sell.
- Breaking the rules means paying a fee of $2,000 or 10% of the trade value — whichever is higher — plus any profit made.
